Types of Rodents in India Which are a Danger to Your Property

House Mouse:

The House Mouse is the most common type of rodents found in India. The four-legged creature who is the main reason you don’t have a peaceful sleep at night, the reason behind all the mess you have to clean when you reach home after a long and tiring day in office, all your socks, handkerchief’s, your desktop wires, cables, cranking the wooden doors, beds, sofas and did I mention the droppings which you have to clean every week?

They have excellent hearing, vision, smell and touch powers and these features have enabled them mouse to be highly adaptable to homes and indoor buildings. Due to their small size and adaptability to enter even in the minute of places, so they often have access to many places along your premises perimeter.

They have Small head & moderately large ears, they are dusty grey color and are color blind, and they feed on Cereal grains, meats, seeds. Their life-span is 1-2 years.

Deer Mouse:

Enemy of the farmers these mischievous little creatures feast on seeds, grains and fruit, they aggravate farmers and infiltrate grain silos and storage bins. These rodents are well-known carriers of the deadly Hantavirus. As prolific breeders, they pose serious health risks for humans and pets.

They are reddish-brown to golden brown in color with white feet & chest and a bi-colored tail measuring 2.5 inches. They have small head & body which is larger than a House Mouse with large and sparsely furred ears. Their lifespan is 2-years.

Norway Mouse:

The basement dwellers, these rats are large in size as compared to Deer Mouse and House Mouse. Due to the extensive urban development and transcends, their habitat is in danger and that’s the reason they dwell in your basements, godowns in the dark. Each female rat can give birth to 20 pups in her life. Their lifespan is limited to 5 to 12 month. They are usually grayish-brown in color, but it can vary from pure gray to reddish brown; they are quite difficult to identify by their color alone. They are 7-10 inches in size with their tail lengthen from 6-8 inches quite shorter than their body their body is heavy & thick, with a blunt nose with ears relatively small and close to body their eyes are large & protruding black eyes. The mainly feed in cereal grains, meats, seeds, cockroaches, fruits, shrimp.

They are mostly found in the west.

Mole:

Technically they are not rodents but insectivores, they are unique in appearance, and their mouth is in an aerodynamic shape (I am not positive though) as they are behind the frustration, angst, and despair of homeowners, they have webbed feet for “swimming” in the soil. These small mammals spend their entire lives below ground, tearing up suburban lawns & gardens in search of food. They mostly feed on earthworms, grubs, beetles and other insects.
